Review of Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force: Planet Rock
For a change in pace, we decided that the 4 Sonic Collective members should select albums from a randomly selected genre for everyones next pick. Hip Hop was chosen and for the second pick of this round member Alain Dupuis selected Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force: Planet Rock.
We definitely all understood the context of this album and the historical significance it had on rap, hip hop and even EDM. What we did learn however, is that not all albums can stand the test of time. This particular album definitely has that early 80’s sound that defined rap in those years. You’ll want to listen along to this one to learn what tracks stood up best, the powerful history around the man Afrika Bambaataa and lots of awesome factoids.
In this podcast you will learn the following about this album and much more:
- How the latest technology at the time in the form of the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer helped change… well… everything.
- How a cutting-edge German electronica band was a major influence.
- A shady past that unfortunately tarnishes the person Afrika Bambaataa.
Listen to our thoughts and see if this is worth going back to and let us know what your experience was with this album.
