King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King

It seems over the last few months I keep hearing King Crimson’s name mentioned. Whether reading music news, listening to podcasts, or watching videos, their name keeps popping up and I’m not sure why? The last few rounds of Sonic Collective picks have seen us explore a couple of bands that touch on prog rock and connect to King Crimson (Genesis, Pink Floyd) so it’s time to learn about this band!

I have never heard a King Crimson song (that I know of), can’t name one, but have become familiar with Robert Fripp during COVID as he and his wife Toyah have been sharing weekly videos of themselves covering songs in innovative ways. To be honest, I thought King Crimson was a hard rock band but having read up on them a bit, it seems they’re more in the prog rock genre.

They have been cited by countless, legendary bands as a major influence and In the Court of the Crimson King, their debut album, noted as their best and also an inspiration to a slew of bands. The album debuted on 10 October 1969, went #1 in the UK and peaked at #28 in the US.

That’s it – I’m not going to share anymore, just dive in with no expectations, as others will hopefully do and find out what King Crimson and this album is all about. Enjoy the listening journey ahead!
