Review: Deftones influenced Sleep Token

Review: This Album Influenced That Album – Deftones, White Pony influenced Sleep Token, Sundowning
Chosen by Alain Dupuis

In this episode, Darren, Scott C, Alain, and Scott G embark on our third of four special episodes where we select two feature albums and discuss how one may have been influenced by the other in some form.

Up for discussion: The Deftone’s third album from 2000, White Pony and Sleep Token’s debut album from 2019, Sundowning.

We all had mixed, but generally positive opinions of both albums, noting how difficult it was to tie either of them to a common sound, sonic profile, or genre. Is it Nu Metal? Metalcore? Progressive hard lectric Rock? Who knows… In both White Pony and Sundowning, from track to track, the listener is on a journey from soft, emotionally torn ballads to eardrum shattering metalcore and occasionally, something in between. Could this dynamic that the Deftones introduced on White Pony have influenced how Sleep Token approached their first album almost twenty years later? It’s certainly worth speculating over.

Another thing we thought might be a common thread between both albums was the drumming. It’s entirely possible that the timekeeping sensibilities Abe Cunninham brings to Deftones may have influenced the drumming style that II of Sleep Token employs to his album.

We all agreed the vocalists are masters of their craft with their skills being on full display thorughout both of these albums. Both Chino and Vessel exercise incredible vocal control and cover a broad spectrum of range and dynamism.

Another thing we all seemed to agree on was our preference towards the softer, slower songs on both albums. The atmospheric, thoughtful instrumentals and songwriting all combine to make for a really great month of music.

Have you listened to either of these albums? If so, what do you think? Let us know and thanks for checking out The Sonic Collective!
